Cecilia Wanjiku, a student at Utumishi Girls Academy, has been honoured posthumously for her bravery and selflessness during the dormitory fire that claimed her life, after she went back into the burning building to save fellow students.
The National Heroes Council recognised Wanjiku for her extraordinary courage and her concern for the safety of others. She chose to help those in danger instead of fleeing the scene. Wanjiku died alongside 15 others in the blaze on the night of May 28, 2026.
According to accounts of the incident, she had initially escaped the burning dormitory safely and without injury. However, she turned back to rescue classmates who remained trapped inside. Tragically, she never came out of the inferno.

The council said her conduct stands as a lasting example of humanity, leadership and service. It added that she showed compassion and courage at a moment of great tragedy.

Although her life was cut short, her legacy is expected to continue inspiring future generations. In particular, it is likely to encourage young people to put the safety and welfare of others first, especially in times of crisis.
