The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled plans to train senior school teachers handling Media Technology, Film and Theatre in all 47 counties as the government seeks to strengthen implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.

The retooling programme will equip teachers with technical skills, pedagogical knowledge and practical competencies needed to deliver the subjects under the Sports and Creative Arts pathway.

In an internal memo dated October 16, 2026, addressed to all regional and county directors, the commission outlined the training schedule, eligibility criteria and designated institutions that will host the exercise.

The first cohort will undergo face-to-face training from November 23 to December 12, 2026, at selected regional training hubs. A second cohort is scheduled for April 2027.

The programme will be conducted through nine regional hubs serving different groups of counties, with institutions selected to provide facilities for the training.

Kabarak University will host the Nakuru hub, serving Nyandarua, Samburu, Baringo, Narok, Kericho and Uasin Gishu counties. The Nairobi hub will be hosted at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) main campus, while Scott Christian University will host the Machakos hub.

Other institutions identified include Tseikuru National Polytechnic, Michuki National Polytechnic, KIMC Eldoret Campus and Rift Valley Technical Training Institute, Kisumu National Polytechnic, Kenya Coast National Polytechnic and Kisii National Polytechnic.

TSC said the training would combine theoretical instruction and hands-on sessions to improve teachers’ ability to use learner-centred approaches and integrate emerging media technologies into classroom learning.

The target participants include TSC-registered teachers and teacher training college tutors with recognised teaching qualifications who are currently assigned to teach Media Technology, Film and Theatre in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Teachers holding additional certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees or postgraduate qualifications in Mass Communication, Film and Theatre, Graphic Design, Animation, Sound Production, Audio and Video Editing, Photography, Videography and related creative disciplines will also be eligible.

The commission has further included teachers who lead or supervise co-curricular activities such as drama, film, journalism and media clubs, particularly those requiring formal recognition of their competencies and support to align their roles with structured CBE delivery.

However, all nominees must be confirmed through the official TSC nomination process and demonstrate basic digital literacy, including the ability to use email, access a Learning Management System and operate a computer.

County and regional directors are expected to facilitate the nomination process, with teachers required to submit their details through an online registration form provided by the commission.

The initiative is intended to strengthen teachers’ capacity to deliver specialised creative subjects as senior schools implement the new curriculum and expand learning opportunities under the Sports and Creative Arts pathway.
