The bursar of Isongo Secondary School is in police custody as detectives investigate the robbery of Sh188,900 from the school's principal, Christine Nekesa Nasiuma, along the Makunga–Isongo road.

The money, withdrawn from KCB Bank's Mumias branch on Wednesday afternoon, October 21, was intended to pay the school's subordinate staff.

Shianda OCPD Dorice Chemos confirmed the incident in an interview with this writer, saying the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was pursuing leads, including examining the bursar's phone records.

“We are putting everything right, and we have taken his phone to see the people he talked to yesterday,” Chemos said.

The bursar, Francis Washiali, is being held as investigations continue. His detention does not establish his involvement in the robbery.

Nasiuma and Washiali reportedly left the bank together, boarded a matatu and alighted at Makunga Trading Centre. The principal then continued towards Isongo on a motorcycle.

At Shikomare, a white saloon car, registration number KDT 876T, allegedly intercepted the motorcycle, causing it and its occupants to fall. Five armed men reportedly emerged from the vehicle, seized Nasiuma's handbag containing the cash and fled.

The circumstances have raised questions about whether the attackers had prior information about the principal's movements. Investigators are expected to establish how the gang knew she was carrying the money and whether anyone helped facilitate the robbery.

OCPD raises alarm over rising robberies

Chemos expressed concern over the renewed rise in robbery cases in Mumias, recalling a fatal incident last year in which a teacher reportedly lost her life alongside money withdrawn from a local bank.

“The rate at which people are losing their money, especially in Mumias, is saddening,” she said, adding that cases had declined before beginning to rise again.

The latest robbery has renewed concerns over the safety of people carrying large sums of cash after visiting banks.

Detectives are continuing their investigations to establish the circumstances of the attack, identify those responsible and recover the stolen money.
