A suspected case of examination malpractice was uncovered on Tuesday morning at Rachar Mixed Day Secondary School in Rarieda Sub-county, Siaya County, after authorities detected an attempt to leak the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Mathematics Paper 1.
The incident was reported at around 8:30 am when the Regional Director of Education for Nyanza alerted Rarieda education officials that an image of the Mathematics Paper 1 had been detected at the national examination command centre in Nairobi shortly after the exam commenced.
A multi-agency team comprising security officers, the Sub-county Director of Education, and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) officials rushed to the school to investigate.

During the operation, officials discovered photocopies of attempted solutions for question numbers 17 and 21 in one of the staff houses within the school compound. The photocopies were reportedly made on a school printer moved to the staff accommodation area, raising suspicion of an organised cheating attempt.
Authorities identified the school’s Mathematics teacher, Dennis Oksinyi, as the prime suspect. However, he is reported to have fled the scene upon noticing the arrival of security officers.
A mobile phone believed to have been used in the communication was recovered alongside phones belonging to the examination officials. All the devices have been seized and handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) cyber-forensics team for analysis.
The school principal, who also serves as the centre manager, was arrested in connection with the incident. Examination officials at the centre, including the supervisor, invigilator and police officers assigned for exam security, were all withdrawn and replaced immediately.
Education authorities confirmed that despite the breach, the examination proceeded smoothly without interruption.
The Ministry of Education has announced that further updates will be issued as investigations continue.
