President William Ruto has broken ground for a Sh200 million student village at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kitui Campus, aimed at easing accommodation challenges for health trainees.
The project is expected to house 580 students. The campus currently has 1,297 students enrolled in various health training programmes.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Ruto reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting students through financing from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), alongside investment in infrastructure to expand access to education and professional training.
The project is part of the government's efforts to improve learning facilities in tertiary institutions and strengthen the country's capacity to train health professionals.
The student village is expected to ease pressure on existing accommodation and reduce the difficulties students face in finding suitable housing near the campus. It will provide hundreds of trainees with access to campus accommodation once completed.
The college was represented at the event by Board Chairperson Joseah K. Cheruiyot and Chief Executive Officer Dr Kelly Oluoch.
