College and university students from Nyandarua County are calling for expanded mentorship programmes to help them cope with financial difficulties and improve their chances of securing employment after graduation.
Speaking during an induction for Tertiary Students Association leaders in Ol-Kalou town, the students said inadequate bursaries and the rising cost of living had placed a heavy financial burden on learners.

They said existing funding should be complemented with career guidance, professional networking and practical training opportunities.

NTCSA representatives Mary Njeri and Marggy Kimani said many students continued to struggle with tuition fees and other expenses despite the financial assistance available. They urged the government to reinstate county bursaries so that students from needy backgrounds can access and complete their education.
"Financial assistance is essential, but students also need guidance and exposure to opportunities that can help them build successful careers," the leaders said.
They also called for the conclusion of court cases challenging the bursary kitty, saying the matter must be resolved to give a clear way forward for financial support to needy learners.
The students argued that structured mentorship would help them connect with experienced professionals, develop relevant skills and make informed career decisions. They called for stronger partnerships between educational institutions, government agencies and industry to expand internship and professional development opportunities.

Nyandarua County Chief Officer for Education, Sports and Youth Affairs Edward Kigo said the county administration is committed to supporting young people through initiatives that promote education and skills development.

Kigo said the county had created additional internship opportunities and urged students to take them up to gain practical experience.
"The opportunities available should be used to build skills and prepare students for the workplace," he said.
