The Ministry of Education has authorised the release of 53 student-athletes from schools across the country to attend a training camp ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
In a letter dated October 8, 2026, the State Department for Basic Education informed County Directors of Education in the affected counties of the decision, following a request by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK).
The student-athletes are scheduled to attend a training camp at Kasarani International Stadium from October 15 to November 13, 2026, as part of preparations for the international competition.
NOCK will meet all expenses related to the training camp and the students' participation in the programme, including travel arrangements.
The ministry has directed school heads to prioritise the safety and welfare of the learners throughout the exercise. It further instructed that appropriate chaperones of the respective genders accompany the students whenever they are outside school for scheduled activities.
The directive was circulated to County Directors of Education in several counties, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega, Bungoma and Busia, to facilitate coordination with the affected schools.
The camp is expected to provide the selected athletes with an opportunity to prepare for the Youth Olympic Games and represent Kenya on the international stage.
The letter was signed by Nelson Sifuna on behalf of the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Basic Education, with a copy forwarded to the Secretary General of NOCK.
