Police in Migori County have launched investigations into a road accident involving a police vehicle that left a schoolgirl seriously injured on Monday evening at Kegonga Town in Kuria East Sub-County.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened at around 6:30pm near Kegonga market centre along the Kegonga-Ntimaru road, a busy stretch often crowded with school children, boda boda riders and traders. It is alleged that a speeding vehicle said to belong to Kegonga Police Post hit the girl as she was crossing the road while heading home from school.
"The vehicle was at high speed. The girl was trying to cross and it knocked her down. We rushed to help her," said Joseph Chacha, an eyewitness who was at the scene.
The girl, said to be a pupil at a nearby primary school, sustained serious injuries to her legs and head. Well-wishers and boda boda riders rushed her to Kegonga Sub-County Hospital, where she was receiving treatment. By the time of going to press, doctors said her condition was stable, but she remained under close observation.
Residents who gathered at the scene accused some drivers of government vehicles of speeding within the town centre without regard to pupils and pedestrians.
The Kuria East Sub-County Police Commander confirmed the incident, saying a team from the traffic department had visited the scene and recorded statements from eyewitnesses. "We have commenced investigations. The vehicle involved has been identified and the circumstances under which the accident occurred will be established. If any officer is found culpable, action will be taken," the police boss said.
He urged motorists to observe speed limits, especially in trading centres and near schools, and advised parents to sensitise children on road safety. The family of the victim is appealing for calm as they await the outcome of investigations and the girl's recovery.
