The Malei Cup Yatta Open Tournament is set to bring together schools, universities and sports clubs for a weekend of competition, talent discovery and sportsmanship on January 30–31, 2027.
The tournament will be held at St. Austin Matuu Day Secondary School, with participants expected to compete across eight sporting disciplines.
The two-day competition will feature handball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, hockey, rugby 15s, netball and table tennis, providing an opportunity for young athletes to showcase their skills and compete for top honours.
The organisers have opened the tournament to high school students, university students and clubs, with categories designed to accommodate different age groups and teams.
Handball will feature junior and senior boys’ and girls’ categories, alongside men’s and women’s clubs, while basketball will include junior and senior school teams as well as clubs.
Volleyball will cater for senior boys’ and girls’ teams and men’s clubs, while soccer will feature senior boys’ and girls’ school teams and men’s clubs. Hockey will be open to senior school teams and clubs, with rugby 15s targeting senior boys and men’s clubs.
Netball will feature senior ladies’ teams, while table tennis will accommodate both ladies and men.
Participants will pay a registration fee of Sh 2,500, as indicated on the event poster. The organisers say the tournament will offer a platform for talent exposure, high-level competition and the promotion of unity through sports.
The event is also expected to encourage teamwork, discipline and healthy competition among participants, while giving emerging athletes an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities beyond their respective institutions.
Under the theme “One Weekend. Many Champions!”, the Malei Cup Yatta aims to make the two-day gathering more than just a sporting contest by bringing together teams and supporters in a shared celebration of athletics.
