Laikipia University is seeking to strengthen its agricultural training and research programmes through a proposed partnership with China’s Nanjing Agricultural University.
The two institutions held discussions on October 20, 2026, when a delegation from the Chinese university, led by Vice-President Jiang Song, visited Laikipia University to explore areas of mutual cooperation.
The talks focused on agricultural sciences, animal science and husbandry, and food security, with both institutions considering opportunities for joint research, staff development, training programmes and student exchanges.
Laikipia University Vice-Chancellor Prof Kibett Rotich, who received the delegation alongside members of the university management, said the shared interests of the institutions provided a strong basis for establishing an academic partnership.
Proposed School of Agriculture to benefit
The proposed collaboration comes as Laikipia University advances plans to establish a School of Agriculture, a development expected to expand its capacity to train professionals and undertake research aimed at addressing challenges facing the agricultural sector.
Through the partnership, the university hopes to enhance the quality of agricultural education, strengthen research capabilities and expose students and academic staff to international expertise and new approaches to farming and food production.
The engagement also builds on existing academic links between the institutions, including connections through members of the Laikipia University community who previously studied at Nanjing Agricultural University.
Institutions explore joint research opportunities
Established in 1902, Nanjing Agricultural University has more than a century of experience in higher education, with expertise in agriculture and life sciences that could support Laikipia University's expanding academic programmes.
The proposed cooperation is expected to create opportunities for knowledge sharing and research initiatives addressing agricultural productivity, livestock development and food security.
For Laikipia University, the engagement represents a step towards expanding its international academic networks while developing programmes that respond to the needs of farmers and communities.
However, the discussions centred on potential areas of collaboration, with the details of any formal partnership yet to be outlined.
