The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has started a fresh conciliation effort to end the strike that has paralysed learning in public universities.
In an official communication signed by Principal Secretary Shadrack Mwadime, the ministry has summoned the leadership of public university staff unions and employer bodies to a meeting on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 11am at the NSSF Building in Nairobi. The mediation follows the industrial action that has disrupted academic operations in public institutions across the country.
The union officials invited are Dr Constantine Wasonga Opiyo of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Dr Charles Mukhwaya of the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), and Thomas Mboya, who represents the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA).

Employer representatives from the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF), led by council chairman Prof Daniel Njiru Mugendi, have also been summoned.

The talks will focus on resolving outstanding financial and non-financial terms in the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). Through the government's multi-agency framework, negotiators will review formal proposals and counterproposals from both sides, with the aim of reaching an agreement, signing the long-delayed accords and restoring normal operations on campuses.
