The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Nandi Branch, has faulted the criteria used to select teachers for national awards, questioning the transparency of the process. KUPPET Nandi Branch Executive Secretary Paul Rotich said the selection process was unclear and therefore unacceptable to the union.

Addressing the press, Rotich questioned why no teacher from Nandi County was selected for the awards despite what he described as the teachers' hard work and commitment to their duties. "The process was not clear, and that is why we cannot accept it. We are asking how the selection was done and why no teacher from Nandi was considered despite the hard work of our teachers," said Rotich.

He said the union was not involved in the selection process and was not even aware of some of the teachers who were selected, describing the situation as worrying.
"As a union, we are not aware of the teachers who were selected. That is a worrying situation because teachers and their representatives should be involved in such a process," he said.

Rotich called for the selection process to be reviewed, insisting that fairness and transparency should be given priority. "We want the process to be reversed and conducted in a fair and transparent manner. Every county and every teacher who deserves recognition should have an equal opportunity," Rotich said.

The union also called on the Ministry of Education to involve KUPPET in decision-making processes affecting teachers. Rotich warned that attempts to sideline the union in matters concerning teachers would not be accepted. "We want to be involved in decision-making by the Ministry of Education. Any attempt to sideline the union will not be accepted because we represent the interests of teachers," he said.

The concerns come as teachers from across the country were feted for exemplary service during celebrations to mark World Teachers' Day at the Kasarani Sports Centre in Nairobi. The awards were part of activities held to recognise teachers for their contribution to education and the development of the country.
