A Grade 8 learner from Kisumu County has earned recognition for her sporting excellence after being celebrated as a hero during this year’s Mashujaa Day festivities.

Angela Roseline Ochieng, a pupil at St Peter’s Kogola School in Central Nyakach Ward, Nyakach Constituency, was honoured after winning the girls’ 100-metre sprint at the 2026 Junior National KPJSSA Athletics Championships.

Her achievement has placed her among the promising young athletes emerging from Kenya’s school sports system, highlighting the role of junior competitions in identifying and nurturing talent at an early age.

Nyakach Deputy County Commissioner Philip Muoki, who presided over the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Nyabola Comprehensive School, congratulated Ochieng for her outstanding performance and urged stakeholders to invest in young athletes.

Muoki expressed hope that the young sprinter would continue developing her abilities and eventually earn a place in the national athletics team, where she could represent Kenya in international competitions.
Ochieng’s recognition also highlighted the importance of supporting school-based sports programmes, which provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities beyond the classroom.

Her national title is a significant milestone in her budding athletics career, with continued training, mentorship and access to appropriate sporting facilities likely to be important in helping her progress to higher levels of competition.

The recognition during Mashujaa Day celebrations underscored the contribution of young people to national achievement and the need to create opportunities for emerging sporting talent to flourish.
