The world marked the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Saturday, October 17, with renewed calls for collective action to address deprivation and protect the rights and dignity of vulnerable populations.

This year’s observance falls under the 2026–2028 theme, “United for Peace and Human Rights,” with the 2026 focus, “Safe Homes for All,” highlighting the link between decent housing, human rights and efforts to lift people out of poverty.

The United Nations estimates that about 826 million people worldwide live in extreme poverty, while approximately 3.8 billion lack social protection, leaving millions of families vulnerable to economic hardship and uncertainty.

Poverty threatens children's access to education

Children remain among those most affected, as poverty can limit their access to adequate food, healthcare, safe housing and quality education.

For learners, financial hardship at home can undermine school attendance, concentration and academic performance. Children from disadvantaged households may struggle to obtain school supplies, nutritious meals and other essentials needed to participate fully in learning.

The annual observance also draws attention to the importance of fair wages, safe working conditions and social protection in enabling families to meet their basic needs and live with dignity.

UN calls for greater protection of vulnerable families

The United Nations has emphasised the importance of listening to people living in poverty and ensuring their experiences and concerns inform policies and interventions designed to address their challenges.

The focus on safe homes further underscores the need to ensure that every family has access to adequate housing and the security required to live with dignity.

As countries mark the day, the campaign serves as a reminder that ending poverty requires coordinated action by governments, communities and other stakeholders to expand opportunities, protect human rights and ensure vulnerable families are not left behind.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people living in poverty and mobilise support for efforts to end deprivation in all its forms.
