The Baringo County Government plans to upgrade all 18 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) in the county, improving infrastructure and facilities so that trainees acquire adequate skills.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Vocational Training and Libraries, Peninah Bartuin, made the announcement at the Mogotio Technical and Vocational College (TVC) graduation ceremony.
She said the county will work with development partners to train ICT instructors through the Standik Foundation and to equip computer workshops in some VTCs. It will also partner with the Government of Morocco to install solar power in some of the centres.
Bartuin said VTCs are key to the economic development of thousands of young people because they equip them with skills that can improve their future.
She urged young men and women to enrol in VTCs across Baringo and acquire skills for the job market.
"We encourage our youths, both ladies and men, to join Vocational Training Centres and acquire the skills which will make them job creators and empower them economically," she said.
The CECM also thanked centre managers for their role in shaping trainees' lives and encouraged them to keep up the effort. She thanked parents and partners for sponsoring training in Baringo's VTCs, saying it is better to equip trainees with skills that enable them to take part in the day-to-day economic development of the county and the country. Several senior officers of the County Government of Baringo attended the event.
