The Kajiado County Government, in partnership with Kipeto Energy, has broken ground for the construction of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kajiado campus.
The move, warmly welcomed by locals, is aimed at expanding access to medical training for local students.
The project, which has been warmly received by residents, is expected to ease the burden on students who have long been forced to travel to distant towns in search of medical education opportunities.
Governor Joseph Ole Lenku said the county has set aside 50 acres of land for the project and expressed confidence that construction will be completed within four months.
“We have committed adequate land and resources to ensure this campus becomes a reality within the shortest time possible,” said Lenku.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Ildamat Ward, Kajiado, he added that the county plans to allocate an additional Sh20 million in the next financial year to accelerate development.
Lenku noted that the new campus will bring training opportunities closer to residents, addressing longstanding challenges faced by students.
“For many years, students from Kajiado have incurred high transportation and accommodation costs to access training in distant institutions. This campus will make education more accessible and affordable,” he said.
The governor emphasized that the institution will play a vital role in addressing the growing demand for skilled health professionals while strengthening the county’s healthcare system.
He also commended KMTC for its collaboration and urged its management to prioritise the development of essential infrastructure at the facility.
KMTC Board Chairman Joseah Cheruiyot lauded the county government for the initiative, noting that investment in training institutions is key to building a strong and sustainable healthcare workforce.
“Human resources remain a critical pillar in the realisation of universal health coverage,” he said.
Kenneth Namunje, a director at Kipeto Energy, said the company has committed Sh10 million towards infrastructure development at the campus as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

“This partnership demonstrates the private sector’s role in supporting community development initiatives,” he said.

Governor Lenku reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare services, noting that efforts are ongoing to enhance access to universal health coverage for all residents.
