A 40-year-old woman is in police custody after two of her children, aged three and six, died when the family house they were locked inside was set on fire in Sosik village, Ndanai, Sotik Sub-County, Bomet County, on Monday night.

Police say the woman allegedly locked the two minors inside the house before setting it ablaze, trapping them in the burning structure with no means of escape. The blaze quickly engulfed the house, and by the time neighbours who had spotted the flames reached the scene, they were unable to pull the children out in time.

The two victims were burnt beyond recognition, according to police, underscoring the intensity of the fire that swept through the home before help could arrive.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently being held at Ndanai Police Station as investigations continue. Police said she will remain in custody pending further inquiries before being arraigned in court.
