  • MoE has flagged as fake a notice claiming that the reopening of schools for the third term has been postponed.
  • The ministry has confirmed that schools will open as planned on August 24, 2026, with no changes made to the academic calendar.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has warned parents and learners against a fake notice circulating online that claims the reopening of schools for the third term has been postponed.

The message, which had gained traction on social media, purported to announce a new reopening date of September 15 for senior schools and secondary schools. On Wednesday, the ministry moved to clarify the situation, confirming that there had been no change to the academic calendar and that schools would open as planned on August 24, 2026.

The State Department for Basic Education said the circulating information had not originated from the ministry and cautioned the public against treating it as an official communication.

The clarification comes at a time when families and schools are completing preparations for the final term, with learners expected to return to class next week. The third term is set to run for nine weeks before schools close on October 23, after which a series of national assessments and examinations will follow.

For primary learners, the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) is scheduled for October 26 to 29. The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will also commence on October 26, while learners sitting the Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment (KPLEA) will begin their assessment on November 2.

At the secondary level, candidates sitting the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination will start their papers on November 2, with the examination period expected to run until November 20.

The ministry noted that the government had already released the 2026 school calendar outlining term dates and the examination schedule, meaning any changes would have to be communicated through official ministry channels. Parents, teachers and learners have consequently been advised to verify education-related announcements before acting on information shared through social media.

The final term and the subsequent national assessments are expected to bring the 2026 school year to a close, paving the way for the December holiday.
