The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has issued a directive outlining official school operating hours for all basic education institutions in Kilifi County.
In a circular, the county director of education, Nicholas Oyucho, directed all senior school principals, heads of primary and junior schools, and pre-primary school administrators to strictly adhere to the stipulated school routine.
According to the directive, official operating hours for all day public and private institutions will run from 8.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. for class hours, Monday to Friday. Co-curricular activities will take place from 3.30 p.m. to 4.45 p.m.
The circular further states that no day institution of basic education and training shall require learners to report earlier than 7.15 a.m., in a move aimed at safeguarding students’ welfare.
For boarding institutions, the ministry has noted that class hours will remain 8.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., followed by co-curricular activities from 3.30 p.m. to 4.45 p.m.
While self-directed learning will run from 5.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m., evening preps from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., and bedtime from 9.30 p.m. to 6.00 a.m.

Supervised routine activities will take place between 6.00 a.m. and 8.00 a.m.
Additionally, no boarding institution will be allowed to send away an unaccompanied learner later than 9.00 a.m., while the latest reporting time for learners returning to boarding schools has been set at 5.00 p.m.
Education officials have been instructed to ensure full compliance with the new guidelines, which are expected to streamline school operations and promote learner safety across the county.
