MMUST, VOSH renew push to strengthen eye care and optometric training

Efforts to enhance eye care services and optometric training have received a boost following a courtesy visit by the Volunteers of Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) to Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

The delegation, led by VOSH Vice President Dr. Jeffrey Weaver and Board Member Prof. Tuwani Rasengane, was received by Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo in a meeting aimed at reviewing and strengthening the ongoing collaboration between the two institutions.

Discussions focused on expanding the partnership that supports eye care initiatives and optometric education at the university, as well as identifying new areas of cooperation in vision care services for students and surrounding communities.

A key highlight of the visit was an assessment of equipment at the MMUST Academic Vision Center, where the VOSH team evaluated existing resources and identified areas that may require upgrading to enhance service delivery and improve practical training for optometry and related health sciences students.

University officials emphasized the importance of international partnerships in advancing healthcare training and expanding access to quality services, noting that collaborations such as that between MMUST and Volunteers of Optometric Services to Humanity are vital in equipping future eye care professionals with relevant skills and resources.

The visit is expected to pave the way for renewed commitments aimed at strengthening eye care services, research, and training. Stakeholders expressed optimism that the partnership will continue to improve the capacity of the MMUST Academic Vision Center to serve both students and the wider community.

VOSH, an international volunteer-driven organization focused on improving access to vision care globally, has played a significant role in supporting MMUST’s optometric training programs and community eye health initiatives.
