The Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) Council has approved a Ksh1.6 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, with a strong focus on infrastructure.
The Council approved the budget on Friday, July 31, 2026, after it was presented by the Chairperson of the Council Finance Committee, Beatrice Tonui. Its approval clears the way for the university to implement priorities set out in its Strategic Plan and its 2026/2027 Performance Contract.
Speaking at the budget approval meeting, MMU Council Chairman Dr Albert Kochei said he was confident the university was well positioned to meet its strategic objectives during the financial year.
“This budget provides the foundation for the university to accelerate the implementation of its Strategic Plan and achieve its performance targets. We expect management to utilise the allocated resources prudently while ensuring that the university continues to deliver quality teaching, research, innovation and community service,” Dr Kochei said.
He added that the approved budget carries a projected funding deficit of about Ksh300 million. Council is confident the gap can be closed through prudent financial management and higher revenue from the university’s income-generating initiatives.
Key projects covered by the budget include completion of the MMU Library Complex and ongoing renovation of the MMU Hotel and the Club House. Once complete, these are expected to improve the university’s teaching environment and boost internally generated revenue.

Money has also been set aside for renovation and maintenance of student hostels, an upgrade of the university’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, and improved internet connectivity across the campus to support digital learning and administrative efficiency.
Council reaffirmed its commitment to operationalising Multimedia University Enterprises and Services Ltd (MMUES), allocating Ksh2.5 million towards its establishment. The enterprise is expected to commercialise the university’s products and services, improve the performance of existing Income Generating Units (IGUs), and expand opportunities for revenue generation. On staff welfare, Council allocated Ksh10 million towards staff promotions.
Tonui said the budget was developed through a comprehensive consultative process and in full compliance with government budgeting regulations and guidelines.
MMU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Rosebella Maranga welcomed the council’s approval and assured members that management would implement the budget with accountability and fiscal discipline.
She said management and staff would work together to ensure MMUES and the university’s IGUs were effective in raising internally generated revenue and closing the projected funding gap.
According to Prof Maranga, the approved budget underscores council’s commitment to strengthening the university’s financial sustainability while investing in strategic infrastructure, digital transformation, staff development and better service delivery for students and other stakeholders.
