The Ministry of Education has closed 174 schools in Nyanza region after Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha ordered a crackdown on unsafe education institutions.
Kisii County tops the list of most affected schools, 52 schools were shutdown .Most of the schools affected by this closure are privately owned.
According to Kisii County Director of Education, Pius Ng’oma, the affected schools were closed after failing to improve the conditions of their institutions.
He pointed out that the exercise was done in a human manner to avoid crisis during the national examination period.
Ng’oma also explained that once a school changes location, status and increases its population, it ought to seek re-registration. This will help tackle the infrastructural issue of having many employed teachers who are not employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Kenya National Union of Teachers officials, however, want the ministry to crack down on public schools before going after private institutions.
Other counties affected are Migori (42), Kisumu (22),Siaya (25),Homabay ( 19), and Nyamira ( 14).
