Basketball players in action. Maseno School has booked slots for both Basketball and handball after shinning at the Kisumu County games.

Maseno School delivered an impressive performance at the Kisumu County finals of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One Games, booking regional slots in both basketball and handball.

In the basketball final, Maseno School produced a commanding display to defeat Kisumu Boys High School 87–41, sealing the 2026 Kisumu County basketball title in emphatic fashion.

Maseno dominated the contest from the opening quarter, combining swift ball movement, disciplined defense and clinical shooting to take early control of the game. Their fast-paced attacks repeatedly exposed Kisumu Boys’ defense, allowing the team to build a comfortable lead heading into halftime.

Despite attempts by Kisumu Boys to stage a comeback in the second half, Maseno remained firmly in control, extending their lead with well-coordinated plays and strong finishing around the basket.

The convincing victory confirmed Maseno School as the county basketball champions and secured their place in the upcoming regional championships.

The school’s handball team also qualified for the regional stage after thrashing Menara Senior School in the county competition.

The handball team heads to the regional games determined to redeem themselves after a heartbreaking defeat in last year’s regional finals. In 2025, Maseno narrowly lost 16–15 to Manyatta Boys High School, a result that denied them a place at the national championships.

For the past four years, qualification for the national handball championships has remained elusive for Maseno School, with the team repeatedly falling short at the regional stage.

Following last year’s painful loss, Maseno School Chief Principal Peter Owino took steps to motivate the players by sponsoring the team to travel to Mombasa to watch the national championships held at Shanzu Teachers Training College.

The exposure was aimed at inspiring the players and giving them firsthand experience of the level of competition at the national stage.

Now revitalized and motivated, Maseno’s handball team is plotting to end Manyatta Boys’ dominance in the Nyanza region while chasing the national title that has long eluded the school.

With both basketball and handball teams heading to the regional championships, Maseno School will be looking to build on their strong county performances as they seek regional glory and a possible breakthrough at the national level.
