Machakos County laments under-utilization of bursary by disabled

The County Government of Machakos has expressed concern over the underutilization of bursary funds among the disabled community, revealing that only a mere Ksh. 700,000 out of the available Ksh. 80 million county bursary allocation was applied for this year.

The County Executive Member for Youth, Sports, Gender, and Social Welfare, John Kilonzo, disclosed this data during the observance of the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities at Machakos Social Hall on Monday.

Kilonzo urged People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) to actively seek more funding from the government, emphasizing that a higher demand would prompt an increase in financial support for the disabled across various programs.

Machakos County boasts a registry of over 400,000 People Living with Disabilities who are officially recognized by the government.

Kilonzo, who also delivered Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s message, implored the disabled population to participate in public forums for their development needs to be incorporated into the County Annual Development Plans and County Integrated Development Plans.

Governor Ndeti, as conveyed in the speech, revealed that the County Government had taken a deliberate step to establish a Disability Commission in compliance with the law.

“This Commission signifies my commitment to incorporating PLWDs in the decision-making processes,” the governor underscored.
