Machakos children participate in 10km run as leaders seek to develop talent

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi addressing journalists yesterday at Kangundo DEB Primary School ground during a participation in a 10 kilometer Education Run organized by MCA and Athletics Kenya.

Young children aged between 9 and 17 years old  from across Machakos County on Sunday, March 18 participated in a 10 kilometer Education Run organised by Kangundo Central Ward MCA Dickson Kavaa  and Athletics of Kenya.

The event was held at the Kangundo DEB Primary School grounds and attended by Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, AK Vice President Mr Paul Mutwii, Veteran Athlete Patrick Makau, Kangundo Central Ward MCA Kavaa and his Mitaboni counterpart Fredrick Muthoka among a host of other dignitaries.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Mwangangi said athletics was one way of earning income, keeping fit as well as helping the young children to avoid negative practices such as drug abuse.

He said the county government was keen on sports adding the recently held Governor’s Cup Football championship which brought together hundreds of teams across the County was just the beginning.

Mwangangi who represented the Governor at the Education Run said the county administration will in future sponsor athletic championships to tap the huge potential among the youths in the region.

Mwangangi said with proper structures, youths in the region could even rival the Rift Valley region which had dominated the field of Athletics.

“I assure you the County Government of Machakos is very serious on sports. The Governor’s Cup Football Championship was just a beginning. We will soon sponsor athletics and other ball games,” said Mwangangi.

Mwangangi conveyed best wishes from Governor Wavinya Ndeti who is on a working tour in the US. Mwangangi said sports also helped to bring down the rate of crime in the region.
