Nyanza Regional Director of Education (RDE) Nelson Sifuna has expressed fears that the demonstrations planned for Wednesday by the country’s opposition party might disrupt the Regional Music Festivals scheduled to commence on Monday in Migori County.
He thus instructed schools performing on the day to travel on Tuesday.
“On Wednesday, due to the looming demos all teams shall be expected to arrive at the venue by 6:00 am before gates are closed for security reasons,” he said.
Sifuna asked Principals to prepare their teams adequately and avail themselves at respective venues by 8:00 am, issuing a stern warning that arriving late will invite disqualification.
He however said that he was optimistic that participating schools will put their best feet forward.
Speaking to Education News in Migori town, a section of parents asked the Ministry of Education to postpone the Festival fearing that the demos might jeopardize the lives of their children.
According to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral and Teaching Hospital CEO George Rae, the demonstrations held on Friday led to the death of two people and injured a score of others.
“Another victim of the demonstrations died today while those with bullet wounds are undergoing treatment,” he said.
He appealed to residents to report at the hospital to identify some of the casualties who were admitted by Good Samaritans and assist in the treatment and recuperating process.
