Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe has urged parents to take full responsibility for raising and disciplining their children to help curb the rising cases of truancy and indiscipline in schools.

Mugabe said the primary role of teachers is to impart knowledge, while parents should take responsibility for instilling values, discipline and good character in their children.

Parents urged to play their role

He said many parents had abdicated their responsibility of nurturing positive values among their children.

According to the MP, some parents even incite their children against teachers, particularly those who enforce discipline.

“Our current generation of parents have failed to take good care of their children and left the entire responsibility to teachers who should be focused on education matters,” said Mugabe.

“Some parents even insult and assault teachers who instil discipline in their children. This is why we are witnessing a new level of indiscipline in our schools leading to unrest,” he added.

Support for fire-hit school

The MP made the remarks while visiting Friends Senior School–Kongoni in Likuyani Constituency to assess the damage caused by a fire that destroyed a dormitory accommodating 150 students.

He donated 200 mattresses to support the affected learners and pledged to provide blankets and food supplies.
