Wajir woman representative Fatuma Gedi has decried the rising cases of child marriage and illiteracy in the county.
She blamed poverty and retrogressive cultural practices. Gedi said in a year at least 15 girls are known to have been rescued from child marriages.
The legislator who is initiating a Sh8 million bursary kitty for 500 needy girls in the county said girls should not dropout of schools due to lack of school fees.
Wajir Girls Secondary School Principal Hamaru Sylvano revealed that so far they have enrolled four girls rescued from such premature marriages in form one. Sylvano added that limited resources in the region made many parents fancy enrolling boys in school instead of girls.
