KUCCPS opens historic late application portal for 57,681 students who missed 2026/2027 university placement

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba speaks during the release of the 2026/2027 KUCCPS placement results. Following his directive, KUCCPS has opened a special late degree application window for qualified KCSE candidates who missed university placement.
  • KUCCPS has opened a special late application window for degree programmes targeting qualified students who missed placement.
  • The opportunity is available to candidates who sat the KCSE examinations between 2022 and 2025 and attained a minimum grade of C+ (Plus).
  • The move follows a directive by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba to give eligible learners a second at university admission.

Thousands of Kenyan students who qualified for university admission but failed to secure placement have received a major boost after the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) unveiled a special late application window for degree programmes.

The initiative, the first of its kind since KUCCPS was established, targets candidates who sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations between 2022 and 2025 and attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ (Plus), but were not placed during the regular admission exercise.

The decision follows a directive issued by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba during the release of the 2026/2027 university and college placement results. The CS instructed KUCCPS to establish a structured and transparent mechanism that would allow qualified students who missed the normal application cycle another opportunity to pursue university education.

The move is expected to reduce the number of eligible learners forced to postpone their university education despite meeting the minimum entry requirements.

Why thousands were left out

Data released by the Ministry of Education shows that 268,729 candidates attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above in the 2025 KCSE examination.

However, only 202,133 students secured placement into degree programmes during the main application cycle.

This left approximately 57,681 qualified candidates without university admission despite attaining the grades required for degree studies.

Education officials said many of the affected students either failed to submit applications within the stipulated timelines, experienced administrative challenges or did not participate in the placement process altogether.

Rather than allowing the students to remain outside the higher education system, the Ministry directed KUCCPS to create an alternative pathway that gives them another opportunity to secure admission.

For years, candidates who missed KUCCPS placement had limited options and often relied on manual email requests, a process many considered slow and inconvenient.

The newly introduced online late application window marks a significant shift in university admissions by making the process faster, more transparent and more accessible.

Eligible candidates from the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 KCSE cohorts can now submit their applications through the KUCCPS student portal by selecting the “Late Degree Application” option and choosing available programmes in participating universities.

The new system is expected to improve efficiency while ensuring deserving students are not permanently locked out of university education because they missed the initial application period.

Universities have enough capacity

Even as thousands of students seek university admission, education authorities have assured Kenyans that the country has sufficient capacity to accommodate all qualified learners.

KUCCPS says Kenyan universities currently have more than 322,000 available degree slots, meaning there is adequate room for every eligible candidate who wishes to pursue higher education.

Officials maintain that the challenge has not been the availability of university spaces but ensuring that all qualified students complete the application process within the prescribed timelines.

The latest placement exercise once again demonstrated the intense competition for professional degree programmes.

Medicine emerged as the most competitive course after attracting more than 6,500 applicants competing for only 702 available positions nationwide.

Other highly sought-after programmes also continued to attract overwhelming demand as students competed for limited training opportunities.

Among public universities, Kenyatta University admitted the highest number of students after receiving 11,224 placements during the 2026/2027 placement exercise.

Alongside the late application exercise, KUCCPS has also opened the annual inter-institutional transfer window for students wishing to change universities or switch degree programmes after placement.

The transfer process will remain open until August 14, allowing students to explore alternative courses and institutions based on their interests, qualifications and available vacancies.

Education experts believe the combined measures will make the placement process more flexible while improving access to university education for thousands of learners.

A new chapter

The introduction of a dedicated late application window represents one of the most significant reforms in KUCCPS admission procedures in recent years.

Beyond offering a second chance to thousands of qualified students, the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education and ensuring that academic potential is not lost because of missed deadlines or procedural challenges.
