The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Rachuonyo Branch has raised concern over rising insecurity in Rachuonyo East Sub-county following the killing of a Maseno University professor and the attack on a teacher in separate incidents.
Professor Daniel Dondi of Maseno University was allegedly killed at his home in Olima, Kokwanyo East, while, in a separate incident on Thursday, a teacher was attacked at Uhuru Shopping Centre.
The teacher remained in critical condition at Matata Hospital as of Friday when KNUT officials visited him.
Concern over rising attacks
KNUT Rachuonyo Branch Executive Secretary Rose Otieno said the incidents had sent shockwaves through the teaching fraternity and the wider community.
“Violence has now reached our homes, our schools, and our colleagues. This situation is unacceptable and cannot be normalised,” she said.
Madam Otieno described Prof. Dondi as a distinguished scholar, respected mentor and devoted family man whose death was a great loss to the academic community and the nation.
The union condemned the deteriorating security situation in the sub-county and urged security agencies to move swiftly to restore law and order.
Madam Otieno called for immediate action to ensure those responsible for the attacks are arrested and prosecuted.
“Our members, their families, learners and the entire community deserve to live, work, and learn in a safe and secure environment,” she said.
