Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) TVET College has received approval to implement the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Programme, marking a major milestone in expanding access to skills certification for thousands of artisans, technicians, and experienced workers across Kenya.
The approval follows the University’s accreditation by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) as a Qualification Awarding Body (QAB), granting MMUST the mandate to conduct Recognition of Prior Learning assessments and award qualifications in line with the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).
The development is expected to benefit individuals who have acquired skills through informal training, workplace experience, apprenticeships, or self-learning by enabling them to have their competencies formally assessed, recognised, and certified without necessarily following conventional academic pathways.
The accreditation certificate was officially presented to the MMUST Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, by KNQA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Alice Kande and KNQA Board Chairman Stanley Kiptis.

The Vice Chancellor was accompanied during the presentation by MMUST TVET College Principal Prof. Stephen Odebero and Director of Career Services Prof. Robert Egessa.
The accreditation positions MMUST TVET College among institutions supporting the government’s agenda of promoting competency-based training and enhancing employability by recognising skills acquired outside the formal education system.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that the Recognition of Prior Learning programme will improve career progression, increase employment opportunities, and bridge the gap between practical workplace experience and nationally recognised qualifications. Through the programme, skilled workers will now be able to earn formal certification, enhancing their competitiveness in both local and international labour markets.
