KNEC revises calendar for pilot Grade 9 exams

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has revised the schedule for the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) teachers’ pilot study for Grade 9 exams as invigilators and examiners.

In a memo from the office of Chief Executive Officer, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) addressed to the Sub-County Directors dated June 28, 2024 and seen by Education News, the pilot tools for Grade 9 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and Kenya Prevocational Level Education (KPLEA) summative assessments will be administered between July 15- 19, 2024.

TSC announced that the pilot study will not take place as earlier scheduled to take place as from today, July 1-5, 2024.

Consequently, the Commission announced that the scoring of the KJSEA pilot tools will take place on August 2- 13, 2024.

“The purpose of this letter is to request you to take note of the revised dates for your necessary action,” it reads in part.

The current Grade 9 students are being prepared to do the exams sometime next year thereafter they will be enrolled to Grade 10 in Senior Schools for three years under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in 2026.

While there, they will choose from three pathways which includes; Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences commonly known as humanities and performing arts, music and athletics as the government seeks to allow for specialisation in the curriculum.
