The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened additional training slots for teachers seeking to become examiners for the 2026 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), triggering a rush of applications from educators across the country.
The newly announced vacancies target several learning areas, with teachers being urged to submit their applications immediately through the KNEC examiners’ portal before the available positions are filled.
According to the latest update, Creative Arts and Sports (CAS) has the highest number of openings, with 1,000 vacancies available and 630 applications already received. Teachers deployed to teach the subject have been encouraged to prioritise applying for the category before the remaining slots are taken.
Slots available across learning areas
Other available vacancies include Mathematics, which has 250 positions with 224 applicants already registered; Integrated Science, with 250 vacancies and 226 applicants; Social Studies, with 250 vacancies and 215 applicants; Christian Religious Education (CRE), with 200 vacancies and 174 applicants; and Pre-Technical Studies, with 500 vacancies and 300 applications received.
Teachers have been advised to log into the KNEC examiners’ portal and complete the initial application process immediately, even if they are yet to upload all the required documents.
The documents can be uploaded later, allowing applicants to reserve available slots before they are exhausted.
Education stakeholders have warned that the vacancies are being filled on a first-come, first-served basis and could be fully taken within a short period due to the overwhelming demand from teachers seeking examiner training opportunities.

KNEC recently invited qualified teachers and tutors to apply for examiner training for both KJSEA and the KCSE.
The training is conducted through a blended approach combining online learning and residential sessions. Teachers who successfully complete the programme become eligible for engagement as KNEC examiners, subject to the council’s staffing requirements.
