More than 65 chess players from the Trans-Nzoia region’s Individual School Chess competition have qualified for the national chess finals. With more than 20 players, Kitale School is leading the charge and will participate in the Nationals, which will be held at Mangu School next month.
In the qualification finals organized at Lamplighter School in Kitale on Saturday, Nathan Bahati from Kitale School led the U-7 category with 6 points after all six rounds, followed by Alexis Xaviour from Kitale Progressive, Ethan Emolem from Lamplighter School, Joshua Wasike from Jack and Jill, and Miguel Opiyo from Legacy School, who scored 5, 4, 4, and 3 points respectively.
In the girls’ U-7 category, Arabella Samantha from Kitale School led with 6 points, while Sasha Were (Kitale Progressive), June Chepchirchir (Legacy), Shanell Barasa (Kitale School), and Charlotte Khakasa (Forest Road Elementary) followed with 5, 4, 4, and 3 points respectively.

In the U-9 girls’ category, Neriah Achieng from Forest Road Elementary emerged as the leader with 6 points, followed by Irene Njeri from Kitale School, Kristal Imani from Forest Road Elementary, Florence Wanjiru from Golden Tots, and Ilhan Abdiaziz Abdi from Forest Road Elementary, who each scored 5 points.

In the U-9 boys’ category, Christian Otieno earned 5.5 points, while Morris Baraka from Kitale School scored 5 points.
Overall, under Principal David Luganda, Kitale School won the public school title and dominated the competition, with more than 20 of the 42 players qualifying for the national finals. Legacy School took the lead in private schools.

At the same time, St. Monica’s Girls’ High School in Kitale was crowned the queen of the girls’ category, St. Mary’s Kibabii Boys claimed the boys’ title, and St. Patrick’s Makunga School was crowned the champion among mixed schools.
Samuel Wanjala from St. Patrick’s Makunga led the U-17 category with 6 points, while in the U-13 girls’ category, Melinda Cheplangat (Legacy School) and Lucky Akinyi (Kitale School) each scored 6 points.
