Teachers at St. Teresa’s Mission Tartar School in Tartar Parish have undergone comprehensive child protection training organised by the Children Department of the Catholic Diocese of Kitale as part of efforts to strengthen learner safety and improve child welfare in schools.
The training, coordinated by Rose Obonyo, equipped teachers with knowledge and practical skills to enhance their roles as educators while safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of learners.
Facilitators emphasised the importance of creating child-friendly learning environments where every learner feels safe, respected and protected.
They noted that secure and supportive schools are essential for improving learning outcomes and promoting the holistic development of children.
Teachers were also encouraged to strengthen collaboration with parents and guardians, saying effective child protection requires strong partnerships between schools and families.
Protecting vulnerable learners
The workshop focused on helping teachers identify learners who may be exposed to abuse, neglect or other forms of vulnerability.
Participants were urged to remain vigilant and take appropriate action whenever children are identified as being at risk to ensure they receive the necessary protection and support.
The Catholic Diocese of Kitale said empowering teachers with child safeguarding skills remains central to its mission of creating inclusive, safe and nurturing learning environments.
The diocese reaffirmed its commitment to continuous professional development for teachers and other stakeholders involved in child welfare.
Education stakeholders have increasingly called for child protection training in schools as institutions strengthen safeguarding frameworks and promote the rights, dignity and wellbeing of learners.
