Police in Thika, Kiambu County, have launched investigations into the death of a 16-year-old student at Thika High School following an alleged altercation with a fellow learner that turned tragic within the school compound.
The deceased, a Grade 10 learner under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), reportedly died after an incident that occurred on Friday, July 10, 2026.
According to preliminary police investigations, the student was involved in a disagreement with a classmate before the confrontation escalated.
Investigators suspect that during the altercation, the learner fell from the first floor of one of the school’s buildings, sustaining serious injuries.
Despite efforts to save his life, the student succumbed to the injuries, prompting police to open a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has shocked students, parents and members of the local community while raising fresh concerns over learner safety and conflict management in schools.
Relatives of the deceased have expressed frustration over what they described as inadequate communication from the school regarding the events leading to the student’s death.
Speaking outside Thika Level 5 Hospital, family member Jamal Aidid said the family was still seeking a clear account of what happened.
“The family is deeply distressed because we have not been given clear information about what exactly happened to our child,” he said.
Awaiting post-mortem
Police confirmed that the incident was recorded under Occurrence Book (OB) No. 02/11/07/2026, with detectives commencing investigations immediately.
Relatives gathered at Thika Level 5 Hospital on Saturday as they awaited a post-mortem examination expected to establish the exact cause of death and provide crucial evidence for investigators.
Authorities have appealed for calm as investigations continue.
Detectives are expected to interview students, teachers and other witnesses who may have information relevant to the case.
The incident has renewed concerns over bullying, violence and conflict resolution in schools, with education stakeholders calling for stronger preventive measures to safeguard learners.
