Kisii and Kisumu National polytechnics were on Sunday, June 2nd, crowned Kenya Technical Training Institutes Sports Organization (KATTISO) Lake Region women’s and men’s basketball champions.

Kisii, led by team captain Benerdate Onsongo, defeated hosts Siaya Technical Institute by a 51-25 margin.

“It was a good final for us. They beat us in the opening game but we did not lose hope. After the arrival of our coach, we decided to refocus and work hard. That’s how we won this tournament. We will now train for the nationals,” Onsongo said after the win.

During the semifinals, Kisii defeated Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) with a score of 47-13, while Siaya emerged victorious against Mawego with a score of 23-15. In the third-place play-off, Mawego secured a win over Ramogi, prevailing 35-11.

In the men’s category, Kisumu held on to secure a thrilling victory against Siala Technical Training Institute, winning 44-41 in an intense final.

Kisumu dominated the first quarter with a 15-8 lead, maintained their advantage by winning the second quarter 10-9, and extended it further to 21-11 in the third. Although Siala mounted a comeback in the last quarter, scoring 13 points to Kisumu’s 7, it was not enough to overcome Kisumu’s lead.

“It was a tough final but I am happy we won. My players relaxed in the second half, which put us under a lot pressure. I will address the weaknesses I identified in this tournament before the nationals where we target the title,” said Kisumu coach Wesley Kirwa.
