Kisumu dissolves bursary committee over abuse of office

The County Government of Kisumu has dissolved one of its bursary committees which were recently constituted to identify bright but needy students in sub counties.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Education and ICT Mr. John Awiti declared that the Nyando sub county’s East Kano Wawidhi Ward Bursary Committee be dissolved with immediate effect for failing to follow bursary issuance guidelines.

The move follows complaints that the name of a needy student from the area was removed from the list of beneficiaries.

“It was reported that the candidate who got 393 marks in the 2022 KCPE had her name replaced with another applicant,” he said.

Awiti instructed that the name of the needy candidate, Juma Adhiambo Jane, be unconditionally re-instated into the list of beneficiaries and her bursary’s letter of commitment to be papered urgently to enable her report to Bunyore Girls High school.

The parents of the candidate lauded Mr. Awiti for the swift action taken.

Speaking in Kisumu, Awiti said that Ward Administrators across the county must remain non-partisan in processing the distribution of bursaries and scholarships.
