The outcome of the 2026 Nyanza Region Secondary Schools boys’ football championship hangs in the balance after Kisumu Boys High School lodged an official appeal against St. Mary’s Yala, alleging that the champions fielded ineligible players during the regional final.

St. Mary’s Yala defeated Kisumu Boys 1-0 in a closely contested final to lift the regional title and qualify for the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two Games.

Shortly after the match, Kisumu Boys formally challenged the result, claiming that St. Mary’s Yala fielded players who did not meet the competition’s eligibility requirements.

The appeal has been submitted to the tournament jury, which is expected to investigate the allegations before issuing its verdict ahead of the national championships.

If upheld, the decision could determine which school represents the Nyanza Region at the national games.

The latest appeal adds to a growing list of eligibility disputes that have characterised this year’s secondary school football competitions.

Earlier in the season, Kisumu Boys successfully appealed over player registration irregularities to secure a place in the county championships before advancing to the regional tournament.

Awaiting verdict

Tournament officials had not commented on the latest appeal by the time of publication.

Similarly, St. Mary’s Yala had not publicly responded to the allegations.

The tournament jury is expected to determine whether the regional final result will stand or whether further disciplinary action will be taken following the investigation.
