Kisii University has unveiled a new system designed to simplify the process of securing teaching practice placements for student teachers, offering a structured model that could inspire other institutions of higher learning.
Under the initiative, students log into a university portal to select schools where they wish to undertake their teaching practice. The university then engages the chosen schools directly, negotiating placement opportunities on behalf of the trainees.

This marks a departure from the traditional arrangement where students were issued introductory letters and left to independently seek schools willing to host them. For many student teachers, that process has often been challenging, particularly where schools face limited capacity or receive numerous requests from different universities.
By taking on a more active role, Kisii University provides additional support to its students while coordinating placements in a more organised and transparent manner. The system has been welcomed as an example of how technology and institutional involvement can improve the professional training experience.

Teaching practice remains a critical component of teacher education, and the new approach is expected to ease the transition from classroom learning to practical teaching. Observers say the Kisii University model could encourage other universities offering teacher education programmes to adopt similar strategies, strengthening student welfare and ensuring smoother integration into the teaching profession.
