Alumni of the giant Kisii School, Kisii High Old Boys Association (KHOBA) have launched a mentorship programme to educate students on career choices and life skills, as one way of improving their academic performance.

Ben Gisore, an alumna and chairman of the 1994 class, said the alumni association is constructing a Ksh30 million five-storey tuition block with 25 classrooms.

“The construction of the block was started in 2020 and we are set to complete it in a few years. I’m proud to be part of the project,” he said, further challenging the students to take advantage of the infrastructure to excel in their education.

Gisore, who is also the chairman of Taifa Democratic Coalition (TDC) and the Secretary General of the Kenya National Congress (KNC) party, challenged alumni of various schools to support their former institutions.

Chief Principal Fred Mogaka said the programme will equip learners with the requirements for various careers.

He noted that through the mentorship programmes, the students are guided academically, morally, spiritually and socially to enable them to face and overcome life challenges.

“The alumni shared their experiences with the learners and motivated them to focus on their studies,” he said, even as he revealed that the school used the mentorship programme weekend to fundraise for the shoot of a music video by the school choir.

In terms of preparation for the forthcoming national exams, the school has put together a watertight plan to produce the best results. In 2022 KCSE, the school attained a mean of 9.12, with plans underway to do even better this year.

Over the past few years, the school’s mean score has risen gradually from 7.6 in 2015 to 8.3 in 2019 and 8.8 in 2021.

To improve performance, the candidates set targets in consultation with teachers, parents and other stakeholders, who gave their input in the form of suggestions and commitments to help them achieve them.

Kisii High School Chief Principal Fred Mogaka sings with students during a weekend of mentorship by the alumni at the school.

Mogaka challenged the candidates to work hard to attain the target and appealed to parents to pay fees on time.

“I would also like to urge parents and guardians to give their children enough pocket money to support them emotionally and address their challenges to enhance their performance in the national examination,” the principal appealed, further imploring them to liaise with teachers to know the progress of their children’s education and address their weak areas in time.

The principal said the school admits students with over 350 marks in KCPE, and therefore the expectation was that they would all go to university.

Deputy Principal in charge of Administration Edwin Nyaboga said the school turns 90 next year and preparations are underway to celebrate the same.

He said the school, which was started in 1934 as Government African School (GAS) by colonialists, has produced top-notch professionals and leaders who have excelled in their respective fields and continue to fly the school’s flag high nationally and globally.

“The alumni support various projects at the school and we are proud of them for giving back to the community,” he said.

Director of Studies Edward Nyangoya said the school conducts assessments regularly and asked parents to provide their children with calculators, geometric sets, mathematical tables and other important accessories for easy and convenient study.

PA Chair Evans Atambo lauded the students for their discipline, urging parents to return the favour by settling fee arrears for the school to run smoothly.

Present during the event was Kereri Girls Chief Principal Tabitha Mogonchi and her Nyambaria High School counterpart Charles Onyari who challenged the students to work hard to excel in their studies.
