Kisii Catholic Diocese Bishop Joseph Mairura Okemwa has called for peace and coexistence among residents and the whole world, saying doing so fulfils the divine command from God.
Speaking during a special Mass gathering at Nyabururu Parish, the bishop asked the gathering, especially the youth, to be messengers of peace because they are strong and energetic. He said doing so would help build a better world as they have longer to live in it than the older generation.
“You are the hope of your families and the world. If you live a reckless life, you invite destruction for yourselves and posterity,” he said.
Teachers urged to remain role models
He thanked teachers for being the second caretakers of the youth, as they spend more time with them in school than their parents do, and cautioned them against showing any signs of waywardness, saying this would affect their students, who look up to them as role models.
He thanked Catholic schools in the region, saying they comparatively perform better in national examinations, and attributed this to strong Christian foundations based on humility and service laid in Catholic-sponsored schools.
He also wished the 2026 KCSE candidates good health and success as they prepare to sit the examinations.
On rumours circulating on social media about his retirement, the bishop did not comment personally, but one of the prominent elders in the Church said the retirement of a bishop was not a matter to be speculated about on social media.

He told the public that the Catholic Church has its traditional protocol on the retirement of clergy and that not everyone is authorised to announce it.
“The bishop is appointed from our mother church in Rome, and we believe in orderly protocol,” he said.
