Teachers from four counties in central region converged in Kirinyaga County for the first-ever women football tournament.
The sport brought together teachers from Murang’a, Nyeri, Laikipia and Kiambu, spent their weekend, engaging in different sports as a way of relieving stresses as they plan to get back to classes for the third term.
The tournament that was organized by Athletics Kenya, KUPPET and KNUT, saw at least 300 teachers register and played various sports, being the first tournament to be held in Kirinyaga County after over 10 years.
The first ever women’s football sport brought together six teams drawn from the four counties.
Speaking during the launch, Kirinyaga County Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chairman Denis Murimi said that even if the league was a stress-relieving tournament, winners will advance to the central region and meet with other top teams from Nyeri, Laikipia, Murang’a, and Kiambu counties.
Murimi acknowledged the challenges faced in organizing the league citing issues such as high affiliation and FKF registration fees, as well as a shortage of sports kits that limited the number of participating teams.
He call upon the government to empower football branches. The event was graced by Kenya Seeds Company Chairperson Wangui Ngirici, who hailed the launch as a significant step forward for women’s sports in the region.

She donated uniforms and balls to the participating teams and proposed the formation of a county-wide women’s club – the Kirinyaga Starlets – to nurture female football talent.
The launch has sparked enthusiasm among players and sports enthusiasts across the county, with hopes high that this will be the beginning of a new era for women’s football in Kirinyaga.
David Miano the AK Chair, said as an association they plan to hold a similar one next year and con-current years, for a stable teacher.
Mwangi Kanaiyu KNUT secretary General Kirinyaga chapter said that the government should embrace and finance such an event, as it will go to keeping the teacher’s mental health stable as they start third term.
“The government should finance the sport, as the term starts we need a more and mentally stable teacher, who will handle our children soberly and be ready to assist them” said Kanaiyu.
