Kibabii University and Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) have launched a joint initiative to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming human resource management within higher education institutions, with the development of an AI-powered recruitment platform for universities at the centre of the project.

The initiative was officially launched during a workshop themed “Empowering HR through Artificial Intelligence” held at KEMU’s Nairobi Campus.

The workshop brought together human resource professionals from universities across Kenya to explore how AI can improve efficiency, transparency and fairness in recruitment.

The project is funded by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) through a partnership between Kibabii University and KEMU.

It is led by Principal Investigator Dr. Manasi Echaune and Co-Principal Investigator Dr. Mary Mbithi.

According to Dr. Echaune, the project aims to strengthen the capacity of university human resource professionals by equipping them with Artificial Intelligence knowledge and practical tools to support more effective recruitment decisions.

A key component of the initiative is the development of an AI-powered recruitment platform specifically designed for higher education institutions to promote transparent, efficient and equitable hiring practices.

Modernising university recruitment

The workshop was officially opened by Dr. Dorothy Kirimi, Dean of the School of Business at KEMU, and facilitated by ATARAH Solutions, a Human Resource Management consultancy firm.

Participants were drawn from Kibabii University, KEMU, the University of Kabianga, the University of Embu, Aga Khan University, Bomet University and Moi University.

The participants discussed the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating Artificial Intelligence into university human resource systems.

Workshop sessions covered AI in modern recruitment, practical AI recruitment laboratories and redesigning recruitment processes.

Organisers said the proposed AI-powered recruitment platform is expected to streamline recruitment, reduce administrative bottlenecks, strengthen decision-making and enhance fair, data-driven hiring practices across universities.
