Kiabonyoru Secondary School, Kiabonyoru Primary School and a nearby dispensary are set to receive piped water by August, bringing an end to a water shortage that has affected learning and health services for many years.

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo announced the development, noting that the lack of reliable water has been a persistent challenge for the institutions and the surrounding community.

In a speech read on his behalf by his Personal Assistant, Douglas Ondieki, the governor said the connection of the schools and dispensary to the county’s piped water system is part of his administration’s commitment to improving education and healthcare services.

Nyaribo said the project will cost more than Sh10 million and is expected to be completed soon.

“My desire is for the people of Nyamira to access quality education and health services. Healthy people are the wealth of the country,” he said.

He also urged residents to safeguard the infrastructure once installed to ensure it serves future generations.

Boost for Health and Education

The connection is expected to have a direct impact on the health and academic performance of learners.

Access to clean water will reduce the risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid and cholera, which often contribute to absenteeism in schools.

With water available on site, learners will be able to maintain better hygiene through regular handwashing and improved sanitation facilities, reducing the spread of infections within the school environment.

Improved Learning Environment

Apart from disease prevention, the availability of water is expected to improve concentration and participation in class.

Healthy and hydrated learners are more alert, miss fewer lessons and are better able to engage fully in their studies.

The project will also ease the burden on girls who sometimes miss school to fetch water for their families, helping improve retention and equity in education.

By addressing water access for both the schools and the dispensary, the county is linking education and health in a practical and sustainable manner.
