  • Kericho County has begun distributing 1,484 curriculum materials to ECDE centres, targeting PP1 and PP2 learners, under CECM Judith Chepkorir Chirchir.
  • The county has confirmed plans under its 2026/2027 Annual Development Plan to equip 900 ECDE centres and train 1,422 ECDE teachers.
  • The distribution follows concerns raised by the Senate Standing Committee on Education over inadequate infrastructure, learning materials and feeding challenges at some county ECDE centres.

The Kericho County Government has begun distributing 1,484 curriculum materials to Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres in a move aimed at strengthening teaching and learning at the pre-primary level.

The materials, targeting learners in Pre-Primary One (PP1) and Pre-Primary Two (PP2), were launched by County Executive Committee Member for Education, Culture and Social Services Judith Chepkorir Chirchir. She was accompanied by Chief Officer for Education Richard Tonui and ECDE Director Hellen Tele during the launch. The county government said the materials would give ECDE teachers standardised resources to guide classroom instruction and make learning more structured and responsive to the needs of young learners.

Chirchir said the initiative was part of the county’s continued efforts to improve conditions in ECDE centres by ensuring teachers have adequate resources to support classroom activities. She urged teachers to put the materials to proper use and ensure they contribute to meaningful learning experiences for children at the foundation level.

The county has been implementing several interventions targeting ECDE infrastructure, staffing and teacher development. Its 2026/2027 Annual Development Plan targets the equipping of 900 ECDE centres with chairs, tables and textbooks, alongside capacity building for 1,422 ECDE teachers. The plan identifies teacher training as a key intervention in improving the knowledge and skills of ECDE personnel.

The latest distribution adds to other measures already undertaken by the county to improve access to early learning facilities. In June 2026, the county government reported that it had constructed 129 ECDE centres and ablution blocks over three years and employed 1,137 ECDE teachers on permanent and pensionable terms. The county also reported having 30 ward ECDE coordinators and programme officers tasked with strengthening the management and supervision of ECDE services.

Kericho has further turned its attention to digital learning, with the county saying in June that it was training programme and ICT officers who would, in turn, train more than 1,000 ECDE teachers on digital learning and e-learning through a partnership with Education for Digital Understanding (EIDU).

The latest intervention comes months after the Senate Standing Committee on Education raised concerns over the state of ECDE services in the county. During an oversight visit in June, the committee cited inadequate infrastructure, shortages of learning materials, feeding challenges and management issues among the concerns affecting some ECDE centres. The distribution of the 1,484 curriculum materials is therefore part of wider efforts to address some of the challenges facing early childhood education in the county.

The county government says it will continue supporting ECDE teachers and learners through provision of learning resources, teacher development and improvement of learning facilities.
