- Kenyan schools have registered victories and defeats across several disciplines at the FEASSA Games.
- Upper Hill, Nyamira Girls, St Joseph’s Girls Kitale and Kesogon are among teams recording victories.
- Ugandan and Tanzanian schools are providing stiff competition as teams battle for progression in Morogoro.
Kenyan secondary schools have recorded mixed fortunes as the 2026 Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games entered a competitive phase in Morogoro, Tanzania.
The regional championships have brought together schools from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan, with Kenyan teams producing notable results in hockey, handball, football, rugby and volleyball.
In girls’ handball, Moi Girls Kamusinga made a winning start, defeating Nyakach Girls’ Senior School 36-25. Kawanda Secondary School also registered a commanding 53-20 victory over Kazima Secondary School.
St Joseph’s Girls Kitale, however, suffered a 40-34 defeat against Uganda’s Gombe Secondary School, while Kibuli Secondary School lost 43-29 to Tanzania’s Diongoya.
Kenya’s representatives also posted mixed results in girls’ football. St Joseph’s Girls Kitale held Uganda’s Alliance Girls Secondary School to a goalless draw, while Nyakach Girls’ Senior School played out a 1-1 draw against Jinja Progressive Academy.
The results left the Kenyan sides with work to do as they seek to strengthen their positions in the competition and push for progression into the latter stages.
In boys’ football, Kakamega School suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Uganda’s Kyadondo Secondary School. St Mary’s Yala were also edged 1-0 by Uganda’s St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School.
Amus College School of Uganda defeated Tanzania’s Mbeya Day Secondary School 1-0, while Nsumba Secondary School of Tanzania beat Burundi’s Iphem Makamba 3-2.
Upper Hill, Kenyan hockey teams impress
Kenya’s strongest showing came in rugby 15s, where Upper Hill School secured a convincing 25-10 victory over Uganda’s St Mary’s College Kisubi. Jinja Secondary School of Uganda, meanwhile, overwhelmed Tanzania’s Elerai 31-0.
In girls’ hockey, St Joseph’s Girls Kitale announced their intentions with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa High School.
Nyamira Girls High School produced the biggest margin of victory in the discipline, cruising to a 6-0 win over Arusha Meru International School, while Ng’iya Girls National School edged Mt St Mary’s College Namagunga 1-0.
Kesogon dominates in volleyball
Kenyan schools also featured prominently in volleyball, with Kesogon securing an emphatic 3-0 victory over Tanzania’s Lumala. Kesogon won the sets 25-3, 25-7 and 25-12.
Chepsaita, however, suffered a closely fought 3-2 defeat to Uganda’s Namugongo, despite winning two sets in the encounter.
The boys’ handball category proved challenging for the Kenyan representatives. Matutu Memorial School went down 40-23 to Uganda’s Gombe Secondary School, while St Joseph’s Boys Kitale lost 43-35 to Wampeewo Ntaake Secondary School of Uganda.
The opening results point to a fiercely contested championship, with Kenyan teams facing strong opposition from Uganda and Tanzania in several disciplines.
As the FEASSA Games continue in Morogoro, attention now shifts to the remaining group matches, with Kenyan schools needing consistency in the coming fixtures to secure progression and keep their medal ambitions alive.
The championships are providing a crucial regional stage for secondary school athletes to compete against some of East Africa’s leading school teams while showcasing emerging talent across the region.
