The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) has embarked on a nationwide training programme for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers aimed at strengthening career guidance and preparing learners for the transition to Senior School.
A circular seen by Education News indicates that heads of institutions were asked to nominate two JSS teachers from each school to participate in the training, which is targeting teachers responsible for career guidance in JSS as well as heads of institutions.
The programme began on August 17, 2026, and is expected to run until September 12, 2026, across various regions and counties. It comes at a critical time, as the first cohort under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) prepares to transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10.
According to KEMI, the training has been designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to guide learners in making informed decisions on Senior School pathways, tracks and subject combinations. Teachers will receive face-to-face training at designated venues, while heads of institutions will undergo the programme virtually.

Career guidance has become increasingly important under the CBC system, which requires learners to identify and develop their interests, talents and abilities as they progress through different levels of education.
The training is also expected to help teachers provide learners and parents with accurate information on available Senior School pathways, supporting them in making choices that align with learners’ abilities, interests and future career aspirations.

KEMI has indicated that participating teachers will receive transport reimbursement and a lunch allowance during the training.
The nationwide programme is expected to play a key role in supporting the smooth transition of Grade 9 learners to Senior School, ensuring that career choices are based on informed guidance rather than speculation or parental pressure.
