- KEMI has confirmed that in-person participants will receive transport and lunch allowances, while Heads of Institutions will attend virtually.
The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) has launched a capacity-building programme targeting Junior School leaders and teachers, aimed at strengthening career guidance for learners preparing to transition into Senior School.
The training, set to run from August 17 to September 12, 2026, will focus on equipping teachers and school leaders with the skills to guide Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners through Senior School pathway and track selection.
Details of the programme were communicated in a letter signed by KEMI Chief Executive Officer Dr Maurice Odundo and addressed to all County Directors of Education, who have been asked to facilitate the training in their respective areas.
The initiative is tied to the ongoing rollout of Kenya’s Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, under which learners move from Junior School to Senior School after completing Grade 9. At that point, they are required to select one of three broad pathways — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science.

According to KEMI, the training is designed to give Junior School teachers and leaders the knowledge and tools needed to help learners make informed choices based on their interests, abilities, talents and career aspirations. Under the Senior School model, learners specialise within their chosen pathway while continuing to engage with core learning areas, with the system built to allow them to pursue directions aligned with their demonstrated potential rather than a single, uniform academic route.

Training for teachers will be conducted in-person, with participants set to receive transport reimbursement and a lunch allowance. Heads of Institutions, however, will undergo the training virtually, with KEMI indicating that further communication on the virtual sessions will be issued separately.
The programme is expected to strengthen teachers’ role in preparing learners to navigate the decisions that will shape their Senior School education and, ultimately, their future career paths.
