It was song and dance at Oginga Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay after Kobala Girls from were crowned champions of 2024 Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament.
Governor Gladys Wanga was forced to appear in town to lead the residents in dance and singing to celebrate the win and also addressed them.
She thanked the residents exhibiting sporting spirit. “I am happy you love our gallant young talented sporting warriors who have made us proud,” she said.
Wanga said that it was a deep pride for the team to secure an International ticket to represent Kenya in Romania.
“Our girls’ achievement has made Homa Bay proud and we have no doubt that they will represent our country well in their next assignment,” she said.
Some of the girls’ schools that participated in the event include Agoro Mixed, Asumbi, Ogande, Sindo, Ratanga, Waware and Atela.
In the boys category we had Nyamanga, Mbita, Kuoyo Kochia, Homa Bay, Oriwo, Agoro Sare, Tonga and Ringa.
Homay Boys and Kobala qualified to represent the Homa Bay County against Marsabit, Kilifi and Nairobi, which were the only participating counties at the European Day Tournament.
According to Elias Otieno one of the key coaches of Kobala Girls school team, the girls fought to beat Dagorreti Mixed while Highway trounced Ringa Boys of Homa Bay at 2-1 in the Ulinzi Stadium, Nairobi.
The two teams will now travel to Romania for specialised training camp through full sponsorship by the European Union.

The crowd pulling tournament attracted 32 girls and and same number for boys drawn from the four counties.
European Union Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger who graced the occasioned, emphasized the importance of sports as they unite all people across the globe.
She asked the youth to peace the champions of peace through their sporting activities.
“The youths are the hope of the future of prosperity of their countries let them cultivate the culture of international cooperation for the peaceful coexistence of nations “She said.
Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Defence Aden Duale congratulated the European Union for supporting sports in the country and expressed his desire for the continued relationship.
He thanked the winning teams and wished them success as the will carry the flag of Kenya high among other nations.
